Three countries came together under SPLASH Comenius Multilateral School Project from September 2007 to July 2009. SPLASH stands for SPorts and LAnguages in Schools that are Healthy. One of the main objectives of the project is to raise an awareness of the importance of healthy eating and fitness.
The four participating schools from the three countries are Enfield County, Lea Valley High School from the UK, Gymnasium (Grammar School) Farmsen from Germany and Antalya Lisesi from Turkey.
In the course of the project, we have put together different healthy eating recipes from all three partner countries. This produced the outcome of a published book which contains healthy recipes written and commented by the students and translated into the other two languages by the teachers at the schools
We also provided a communication and presentation arena for our project which is the project web site which can be found at the web address: www.splashproject.org.
Another task we got through was the comparison of our students’ fitness conditions for which we used fitness tests and applied on our 30 students with the help of physical education teachers and these were compared and reported on the second meeting of the project in Germany.
We also compared the three countries’ pupils in terms of their perceptions and habits about healthy eating and living. For this we instrumented a questionnaire which we names Splashionnaire and again 30 students from each school answered these and the answers were compared with the other countries students’ answers in Germany.
A student from Turkey, Funda Varol, as the winner of the competition called “a poster for our Splash” designed the poster which has and is used as the Splash logo. This poster was used on the websitewww.splashproject.org. and on the T-shirts as the main pattern.
Finally, on the third meeting which was held in Turkey, Turkish teachers and the students proposed a game called “9 Red Bricks”. This game was a copy of the traditional Turkish game called Yedi Kiremit. The project teachers modified the game, writing up the rules for it and thus, a new game which is based on teams, coordination and cooperation was created.
